THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE by Neil Gaiman (Review)

The title of the book intrigued me. Can an ocean really exist at the end of a lane? This book made me think of my own childhood fantasies. This is my fourth novel of Gaiman. Sometimes I think that his plots are flimsy, but this book changed that. It had wonderful characters, and a delightful plot. It was interesting from the beginning to the end.

The book in short is about families. It clearly shows how children understand certain things while grownups don’t. Children tend to understand things in their own way, and adults not having such a sense of understanding danger simply follow the path. Children are not so, they perceive that something sinister is happening even though adults don’t notice it.

There are many references to myths and children’s stories. But the magical family is not very clear. We don’t understand who they are, and what do they do exactly. They seem to exist all the time saving this world from terrible things. This is an interesting premise. The stimulating bad creature who tries to help people doesn’t even know that it is doing more harm than help to the people. Even the villainous creature has some incredulous enemies. That is the twist in the story. Apart from the plot and the story line there are plenty of didactic lessons for children. It shows children that they should be brave in the face of danger. Bad things can ruin a person if they are not prepared to fight the evil.

It was a wonderful read. Hope every kid reads this book. But I think adults would find it more interesting than kids. For adults can understand how blind they are to certain things around them. Children can be clever, and more vigilant when it comes to evil in disguise.
